Bikers, kayakers, and runners gathered for the annual Taming of the Slough in East Moline, Illinois, but the 2015 event brought in a new group of participants.
The event, hosted by River Action, was held Saturday, September 19, 2015. Taming of the Slough has been held in the Quad Cities for 10 years and this year organizers added a Youth Division to include athletes from ages 12 to 17.
The original race route was set to include a 3.8 mile kayak or canoe paddle around Campbell's Island, a 3.8 mile paved bike path to Illiniwek Forest Preserve for a 4.5 mile mountain bike course, and a 2 mile run on both paved roads and off-road trails along the River Way Trail and through McNeals's Reserve.
For the Youth Division, the route included a 2.4 mile paddle, 5.8 mile bike, and a 2 mile run.
According to River Action's Facebook page, heavy rains the day before caused organizers to move the bike path to Shuler's Shady Grove Park in Rapids City.
Participants could either do the course solo or with a team.
