The chief of the Coal Valley Police Department has resigned/retired, according to city officials.

Chief Mark Poulos joined the Coal Valley Police Department in October 2010; he previously served more than 33 years with the Rock Island, Illinois Police Department.

Poulos’ departure was called a “resignation/retirement” in a September 18, 2015 announcement issued by the department.  Poulos’ name and photo did not appear on the police department’s web page that same morning.

“We would like to thank Chief Poulos for his service to Coal Valley and our residents and wish him all the best in any future endeavors,” the announcement said.

Lt. Jack Chick, who has been with the Coal Valley Police Department for ten years, will serve as interim chief.

“Other area law enforcement agencies will also assist in providing protective services to the village as needed,” the announcement said, and the vacant position will be advertised on the village website.
