Serena Williams lost to unseeded Roberta Vinci of Italy in the semifinals of the U.S. Open on Friday to end a bid to win a calendar Grand Slam.
Vinci beat Williams, the top seed, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. According to ESPN, Williams had won 26 matches in a row in her attempt for a Grand Slam.
The win on Friday, September 11, 2015 was the first time in Vinci’s career that she had defeated Williams, according to the report.
Vinci was set to play Flavia Pennetta in the final on Saturday at 2 p.m. Central Time.
