Police say one person was killed and two others were wounded when gunfire broke out in a fight near Sacramento City College.

According to the Sacramento Police Department, the shooting happened before 4 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 2015, when a fight had broken out between two groups of people.  Three people who had been shot were found in a parking lot on the south edge of Sacramento City College's campus.

Police said one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Another person was hospitalized but was expected to be okay, and a third had only minor injuries that did not require medical treatment. According to a report by Fox 40, all the victims were students.

In the fight that broke out, a gun and a knife were brought out and escalated the fight, according to Sacramento police.

Police said the person who died was believed to have been part of the fight.

"The involvement of gang activity is not being ruled out," police said in a statement.

Police say they believe the shooter was a man who fled the scene.  He is described as being Pacific Islander, and was wearing a white t-shirt and beige cargo shorts.

The campus was placed on lockdown as police investigated the situation.  Evening classes at the school were cancelled Thursday, but were expected to resume as normal Friday, according to KCRA.
