The University of Iowa is welcoming a new president – Bruce Harreld.

Harreld was announced as the university’s 21st president on Thursday, September 3, 2015, according to the University of Iowa’s website. Harreld, age 64, is a former Harvard Business School faculty member and a corporate executive. According to U of I, he helped save IBM in the 1990s.

The Board of Regents made the announcement after interviewing four candidates and discussing them in a two-hour closed session, according to KCRG. 

The university’s latest president, Sally Mason, served for eight years and retired August 1.

While the school searched for a new president, the school’s vice president for medical affairs, Jean Robilliard has served as the interim president.  Robilliard headed a committee that selected finalists for the position.

“With each search, the Board has worked diligently to find a president that fits each institution’s unique challenges and characteristics,” said Iowa Governor Terry Branstad. “I congratulate Bruce Harreld on becoming the new president of the University of Iowa and look forward to working with him to ensure Iowa students have access to high-quality, affordable higher education while ensuring that our colleges and universities play a key role in by converting university research into career opportunities for our graduates. ”

Harreld’s first day will be November 2. The university confirmed that Harreld was given a five-year contract and will make $590.000.
