Update:

The boil advisory issued within the City of Rock Island has been lifted.

Around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2015, a spokesperson from the city announced that test samples confirmed the water was "safe for consumption without boiling." This area includes customers from 7th Avenue south to 15th Avenue, from 30th Street to the Moline border.

Water customers in Rock Island are urged to note that the advisory lifted Wednesday is separate from a boil order that was issued in another area.  The area including 39th Street to 41st Street on 8th Avenue as well as 41st Street from 8th Avenue to the dead end.  A spokesperson from the city said this boil order is still active.

Original post --

A large area of northeastern Rock Island, Illinois, was under a boil water advisory, and Alleman High School cancelled classes for Wednesday, after a water main break Tuesday, September 1, 2015.

The water main break means the city cannot guarantee that the required minimum water pressure was maintained in the water distribution system that serves the affected area.   Water pressure was restored and repair crews work working on the broken water main.

The boil advisory was effective immediately for Rock Island water customers in an area from 7th Avenue south to 15th Avenue, from 30th Street to the Moline city limits.

The boil advisory was issued just after 12:30 p.m. and was expected to last about 24 hours.

All water used for drinking and cooking should be boiled before use, until further notice.

Alleman High School Principal David Hobin said classes were cancelled at the school for Wednesday, September 2, because of the boil order.  Students could still use the restrooms and wash hands, but water fountains were not available.

Alleman was on a hot weather schedule for Thursday and Friday, September 3 and 4, and will dismiss at 1:35 p.m. on those days.
