Hundreds of people gathered Sunday night at Galesburg High School to mourn the deaths of two teenage girls over the weekend.
According to a statement by the Galesburg Police Department, officers were called to the scene of an accident just after 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning near Valley View Road and West Lake Storey Road. Police said they found 17-year-old Kalee N. Pringle and 15-year-old Kylie Allen deceased inside the vehicle.
Police said the car was traveling north on West Lake Storey Road when Pringle, who was driving the car, lost control of the vehicle going around a curve. The car crashed into a ditch and struck a tree.
Friends and family of Pringle and Allen gathered on the football field at Galesburg High School Sunday night for a candlelight vigil.
"She always had a smile on her face and always said hello to everyone," said Karen Kristler, Kylie's grandmother. "They did everything together."
"She [was] always smiling, very happy, comes from a good family," said Greg Norris, Kalee's stepfather. "They were inseparable."
Police said no alcohol was involved in the accident. Pringle’s mother said police found her daughter’s cell phone in her back pocket, when they discovered her on Saturday.
Ralph Grimm, Superintendent for Galesburg School District, said there will be an all staff meeting Monday morning before school at the high school. There will also be counselors available all week for students who need support.
