On Tuesday, August 11, 2015, Davenport resident Jan Pullella was awarded the Pay It Forward award, for doing good things in the community.

Pullella has been at the Humility of Mary Center on West Central Park Avenue for the past 19 years. As a volunteer now, Pullella helps the retired nuns with their recreational activities. She also has been a big help to friends like Mary Costello though. Four years ago, Costello had a pain in her shoulder that wouldn't go away.

"Jan followed me home and then took me to the emergency room at the hospital and waited twelve hours while they determined what the problem was," Costello said. "They determined it was a heart attack."

Costello has remembered that day ever since. Because of that, she visited Pullella at the center on August 11, to surprise her with the Pay It Forward award.

Pullella started as a registered nurse at Humility of Mary back in 1996. She says the nuns have essentially become like family to her, since she's been at the center. She works on puzzles with the sisters now to pass the time.

"Just having fun with family when you're working on a puzzle or what ever you're doing [is what I enjoy most]," Pullella said. "[When] you're conversing with one another and enjoying life, [that's when things are the best.]"
