STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State University was locked down after reports – that later turned out to be untrue – of an active shooter on campus.

An alert from the school said there was an “active shooter” on campus near Lee Hall. A later update indicated the shooter may be in custody.

CNN reported, “A suspected gunman is in custody after reports of an active shooter at the Mississippi State University campus, the university said via its alert system Thursday. The latest alert states: ‘Suspected shooter in custody. Seek safety until further notice.'”

A later alert from the school advised classes were suspended, and instructed anyone on the campus to remain indoors.  Moments later, the university issued an all-clear alert.

The student taken into custody was identified as Thu-Qui Cong Nguyen, a freshman in computer engineering, according to Sid Salter, Chief Communications Officer at Mississippi State University.  Nguyen is from Madison, Mississippi and goes by the Americanized name “Bill.”  He was in custody and being questioned.

Salter stressed that shots were never fired and no weapon was recovered.
