Scammers posing as Internal Revenue Service employees have been trying to dupe Rock Island County residents into sharing personal information and paying money.
The scammers have been calling residents and using different threats in an attempt to get money and personal information, according to a statement from Sheriff Gerry Bustos.
You can tell that phone calls from people claiming to be from the IRS are fake because the IRS does not contact taxpayers by phone, Bustos said. If you get a call like this, you are advised to hang up and do not provide any information.
“If they leave a call back number or one appears on your caller ID do not return the call,” Bustos said in his statement.
If you have any concerns you should contact your local law enforcement or the IRS.
