Smoke detectors help girl safely escape house fire in Camanche

The sound of smoke detectors awoke a sleeping girl so she could get out of a burning house in Camanche, Iowa.

The sound of smoke detectors awoke a sleeping girl so she could get out of a burning house in Camanche, Iowa.

Firefighters said they arrived to find “moderate smoke” coming from the front door after a kitchen fire was reported in a home in the 1400 block of 4th Street just before 11 p.m. Saturday, August 15, 2015.  The entire house filled with smoke, firefighters said.

“The house had been occupied by a female juvenile sleeping in the residence.  She was able to escape on her own once alerted by the smoke detectors,” said a statement from the Camanche Fire Department.

The fire caused an estimated $6,000 in damage; it was deemed accidental and started on the stove.
