Volkswagen is recalling 420,000 vehicles because of an air bag issue.

The recall was issued for eight models because debris could tamper with a cable that provides power to the front air bag, making it possible that the air bag would not deploy when needed, according to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration.  If the air bag were to not deploy in a crash, the risk of injury increases.

Check your vehicle for recalls here.

Vehicles included in the recall are the CC, Passat, and Teguan, years 2010-2014; Eos and Jetta, years 2010-2013; Golf and GTI, years 2011-2014; Jetta Sportwagen, years 2011-2013.

There have been nine complaints about this issue, saying that failures with the spring/steering column control module have occurred during normal driving conditions and sometimes are accompanied by a noise from the steering column.  When the system fails, an air bag warning light will come on.

While there is no remedy yet for the recall, owners with these vehicles can contact Volkswagen’s customer service line at 1-800-822-8987.

Drivers who notice that the air bag light has come on should contact a dealer immediately to have their vehicle inspected.
