Police seek person of interest after passenger shoots driver of moving car in DeWitt

A Long Grove man was injured, when he was reportedly shot by his passenger, as he drove near the police station in DeWitt, Iowa.

A Long Grove, Iowa man was injured, when he was reportedly shot by his passenger, as he drove near the police station in DeWitt, Iowa.

DeWitt police and Clinton County Sheriff's deputies were sent to investigate a report of gunshots in the area of 6th Avenue and 9th Street just after 11 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2015.  The police department is located at 606 9th Street.

"The preliminary investigation reveals that the victim was traveling in a 2008 Pontiac with two other subjects, when one of the occupants produced a handgun inside the vehicle and fire several rounds at the victim," said a statement from the DeWitt Police Department.  "After being shot, the victim's vehicle struck a marked police car that was parked in front of the police station."

The passengers fled on foot, police said, leaving the 22-year-old driver, later identified as Michael Eric Dewispelaere, in the car.  The driver was hospitalized and listed in stable condition.

Police were trying to find 26-year-old Alejnadro "Alex" Lira from Moline, Illinois for questioning, according to a statement from the DeWitt Police Department. Lira was being considered a person of interest in the investigation.
