A speeding motorcycle and allegedly impaired truck driver collided at an intersection in western Davenport, Iowa.
A northbound Ford pickup truck was hit by the eastbound motorcycle at the intersection of 3rd and Cedar streets just after 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2015, according to police.
"As the Ford crossed through the intersection it crossed through the lane the motorcycle was travelling in and was struck on the left side by the motorcycle," said Davenport Police Corporal Kris Mayer.
The driver of the truck and the motorcycle rider were taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
"The driver of the Ford is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is believed to have been driving while impaired," Cpl. Mayer said. The motorcycle rider was later airlifted to a hospital in Iowa City for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
"Based on witness statements and preliminary examination of evidence at the scene the speed of the motorcycle is a factor," Mayer said.
In an update issued Wednesday afternoon, August 12, 2015, Davenport Police said the motorcycle rider died Wednesday morning from injuries he sustained in the crash. The motorcyclist was identified as 27-year-old Justin James of Davenport.
The 48-year-old Davenport man who drove the pickup truck had not been officially charged in connection with the crash as of early Wednesday afternoon.
