Why it is so difficult to get to, and across, the I-74 Bridge

74 bridge backup

Rehab work on the I-74 Bridge means lane closures, and a very slow commute, for Iowa-bound and Illinois-bound traffic in August.

The Grant Street entrance ramp to Illinois-bound I-74 closed Monday morning, August 10, 2015. That means traffic is detoured on 12th Street to use the State Street entrance ramp instead.

At the same time, Iowa-bound I-74 Bridge traffic was reduced to one open lane. That closure was expected to last at least two weeks, and the backup the first day was nearly to Avenue of the Cities in Moline. The ramp from River Drive in Moline, to Iowa-bound I-74, was also closed, forcing drivers to detour on 19th Street to 7th Avenue to access I-74.

More lane closures are coming, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.

The ramp from westbound (Iowa-bound) I-74 to State and Grant streets will also close starting Monday, August 17. Closing that exit means traffic will have to continue on westbound I-74 to Middle Road where you’ll turn left and double back on eastbound I-74 to get to Grant and State streets.

The detour could be a slow go, however, because that same day (August 17), the right lane of Iowa-bound I-74 will be closed between River Drive in Moline and the exit to Grant and State streets, forcing traffic into a single open lane.

The August 17 closures were expected to last through Sunday, August 30.
