Iowa’s Des Moines and Lee Counties declared disaster areas after June storms

Several Iowa counties impacted by severe weather in June 2015 have been declared disaster areas. Of these counties, Des Moines and Lee Counties were included.

Several Iowa counties impacted by severe weather in June 2015 have been declared disaster areas.  Of these counties, Des Moines and Lee Counties were included.

Governor Terry Branstad placed the request for a Presidential Disaster Declaration on July 22 after storms damaged the area from June 20 – June 25.

The declaration was approved and federal funding to these counties under the Public Assistance Program, according to a statement from the governor’s office. This money will be used for emergency work, repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities,  debris removal, repairs to public property, and loans that may communities may need for government functions or public schools.

With the funding also comes hazard mitigation activities for the whole state, which will strengthen Iowa’s infrastructure and allow the state to minimize the impact of any future disasters, according to the statement.

Iowa has received 22 Presidential Disaster Declarations since March of 2007.

All the counties included in this proclamation are Allamakee, Appanoose, Butler, Clayton, Dallas, Davis, Des Moines, Guthrie, Howard, Jefferson, Lee, Lucas, Marion, Mitchell, Monroe, Warren, WayneWinneshiek and Wright.
