As part of a construction project along 6th Avenue in Rock Island, the contractor is expecting to do some excavation blasting.

A new large diameter relief sewer is being installed on 6th Avenue between 17th and 24th Streets, according to Randall Tweet, the Public Works Director.  Before it can be installed, portions of the bedrock will need to be blasted in order to excavate the rock.

Tweet said the contractor was expected to start drilling for blasting Wednesday, August 5, 2015.  Blasts will continue periodically throughout the remainder of the project.

Before any blasting is done, signs will be put up and the area will be secured. A flagger will also be there to stop traffic as needed.

“An audible horn system with 3 long notes will be sounded prior to each blast shot, followed by one long note after each shot,” Tweet said in his statement. “In addition, it will be necessary to turn off all 2-way radios and cell phones during blasting operations.”

Buildings in the area are expected to shake some during the blasting. Tweet said they will be monitored by qualified blast vibration specialists. Property owners in the area will be notified before blasting begins.

Detour signs will be posted and drivers can expect travel delays.
