Quad Citians in need can get a free backpack filled with supplies for their kids.

From noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, The Cellular Connection (TCC), the largest Verizon Premium Wireless Retailer in the country, planned to give away backpacks as part of the annual School Rocks Backback Giveaway.

The participating locations in the Quad Cities were:

  • 1800 N. Division Road, Suite C in Davenport, Iowa
  • 320 W. Kimberly Road, North Park Mall in Davenport, Iowa
  • 3388 Middle Road in Bettendorf, Iowa
  • 3850 18th Avenue in Rock Island, Illinois
  • 5200 Avenue of the Cities in Moline, Illinois
  • 904 West 4th Street in Milan, Illinois

Each location planned to give away about 200 backpacks filled with school supplies such as pencils, paper, folders, glue, and more.

Local families were invited to come to these locations to pick up a backpack.

“One backpack per child present will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last,” said a spokesperson with the campaign.

Justin Bowers who works at the Rock Island location said his store tends to give away more backpacks than others in the area.

“This town could really use the giving back, and I’ve lived in Rock Island my whole life, so, it’s really special to be part of it,” he said.  Bowers added that any children could get a backpack and there was no need to be a customer.

Bowers said after the giveaway ends, any extra backpacks they have will be given to the general public, whether a person has a child with them or not.

“You get all the essentials,” he said. “It really helps parents out in need, especially this time of year.”

The giveaway includes 100,000 filled backpacks that would be given away by more than 400 TCC stores around the country. Since 2013 more than 260,000 backpacks have been donated to the campaign.
