More delays after mold found in athletic dome at St. Ambrose

After it collapsed during a winter storm, repairs to the athletic dome facility at St. Ambrose University were stalled again after mold was discovered there.

The dome, at 5003 N. Brady Street, was flattened during a storm that brought heavy snow to the Quad Cities area February 1, 2015. No injuries were reported, but athletes had to scramble to find alternate locations for practice. The track team was facing fast-approaching conference and national meets.

University officials previously said they thought the dome would be out of commission through at least the end of March, but repairs continued into mid-April. High winds and colder weather stalled repairs again, and a post from the City of Davenport said the facility was likely to be off-limits until the fall semester.

Now there’s word of a mold problem at the dome.

An industrial hygienist was hired to clean it up, according to SAU spokesperson Jane Kettering.

The dome will remain closed until it is safe for use, and that could mean it may not be ready for pre-season football practice.

There was no date targeted for reopening the dome.
