Some homeowners just south of the Quad Cities are worried about their safety. They say a collapsed sewer system has caused a sinkhole in their yard and they want the city to take responsibility for it.
Jacqueline Lee has lived in her home in Monmouth for almost 17 years problem free, until now. Two weeks ago her husband noticed a sinkhole in their yard right next to the home's foundation.
"We have grand kids here all the time, that`s a huge worry," said Lee.
Lee believes the cause behind the sinkhole is a collapsed sewer system that runs under her home. She says she's reached out to the city several times about the problem. The city sent someone to take a look last week, but Lee hasn't heard anything back since then.
"We don`t feel safe here and there`s still no answers, so it`s very frustrating," said Lee.
Lee says she worried the longer the city takes to address the issue, the more dangerous the situation comes for her family.
"This is our livelihood. This is where we live. How do you know what you`re supposed to do," said Lee.
If there is any damage to her home her insurance company won't cover it.
Lee hopes the city fixes the problem before it's too late, "Somebody has to take responsibility for this and it`s not us."
News Eight reached out to Monmouth's city administrator to find out what caused the sinkhole and if the city is going to fix it, but our call hasn't been returned yet.
