Two Muscatine residents killed in I-80 collision with parked semi

Two Muscatine residents died after hitting a semi that police say was parked on the shoulder of Interstate 80.

(Editor's note:  The initial version of this story mistakenly said the police report said the semi was parked illegally; the report said the semi was legally parked.  We apologize for the error.)

Two Muscatine residents died after hitting a semi that police say was parked on the shoulder of Interstate 80.

According to the Iowa State Patrol's crash report, 22-year-old Gregorio Javier Tapia was headed eastbound on the interstate when his vehicle left the roadway "for unknown reasons," hitting the back of the parked semi.  The crash happened near Lime City, Iowa, just north of Wilton, at mile marker 271 around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, July 26, 2015.

The crash report indicated that the vehicle came to rest in the middle of I-80, blocking both lanes.

Both Tapia and a 19-year-old passenger, Anthony Nunez, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report.
