Crash involving pedestrian near Buffalo Shores

Police say a Bettendorf man tried, but was unable, to avoid hitting a woman as she walked in the street in Buffalo, Iowa.

The 53-year-old Davenport woman was walking on West Front Street near the entrance to Buffalo Shores when she was hit by a westbound vehicle just before 4:30 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2015, police said.  The woman was airlifted to a hospital, and last known to be in critical condition.

Now, police say the vehicle that hit the woman was a pickup truck, and that the driver had tried to avoid hitting her.

“The pickup truck’s driver…attempted to avoid striking the female by maneuvering the vehicle to the shoulder,” said a statement July 14, 2015, from the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.  The driver’s side headlight, quarter fender and driver’s side mirror hit the woman.  The driver over-corrected during the maneuver, causing the truck to spin around before it came to a stop.

The driver then called 911.

The driver, identified as 45-year-old Bruce Treur from Bettendorf, was not injured.  No charges were filed and no citations were issued, police said.

Police withheld the name of the woman involved.  They identified her July 16 as Vicki Lynn Bitner of Davenport.
