A Monmouth, Illinois, man is behind bars after allegedly abducting and assaulting a 32-year-old woman.
Warren County State’s Attorney Chip Algren said Stephan N. Gonzales, 25, will be charged with home invasion, kidnapping, and criminal sexual assault.
Sheriff’s deputies said that on Monday, July 13, 2015, Gonzales abducted a Monmouth woman from her home around 5:30 a.m. They say he then forced her into her car, drove to a rural location, sexually assaulted her, and tied her up and locked her in the trunk of the car.
She later escaped from the car and walked to a nearby farmhouse to call police.
A Warren County sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a truck near the crime scene. The driver drove away, jumped from the truck, and ran into a cornfield. Other agencies arrived, and a manhunt began.
Deputies captured Gonzales in a soybean field about 3 p.m. Monday.
He is being held in the Warren County Jail pending a court appearance on Wednesday, July 15, 2015.
