Blacktop scammers target Henry and Rock Island counties

Scammers, taking money for incomplete or improperly-done driveway work, have hit in Rock Island and Henry counties in Illinois.

Scammers, taking money for incomplete or improperly-done driveway work, have hit in Rock Island and Henry counties, according to police.

If workers show up at your house to blacktop your driveway, but you did not call them, you should tell them to stop work and you should immediately call police, according to a warning about the scam posted by the Village of Coal Valley Police Department.

“Get the name on the side of the work vehicle and license number on the car,” the post said, cautioning residents that if a deal sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true. The scammers often overcharge for the work, or don’t complete the job after they get paid.

After Coal Valley shared the information, the Rock Island Police Department shared the advisory as well.

Police were aware of the scam happening in Rock Island and Henry counties in Illinois, and they hoped to catch the scammers before they leave the Quad Cities area.

“Enterprising individuals are fine,” the post said, “Scammer are not.”
