A four-unit apartment building was damaged by fire that investigators said started with an overloaded extension cord connected to a window air conditioner.

Firefighters said flames were coming from the front door and window when they arrived at the fire, which was reported in the 200 block of South 8th Street at about 1 p.m. Monday, July 13, 2015.

“Firefighters were able to make a quick knock down of the fire and confirm that the occupants were out of the building,” said Fire Marshal Mark Crooks.

Most of the damage was in a first-floor apartment, and the man who lives there was not home at the time of the fire.

“The investigation revealed that an overloaded extension cord, serving a window air conditioner, caused a fire to start behind a couch in the living room,” Crooks said.

The fire was considered accidental.  Damage was estimated at $20,000.

Crooks said there were no working smoke detectors found at the fire scene.

No injuries were reported.
