Work is already underway on the I-74 Bridge Project, but there are still questions regarding how it will be funded.

About 80% of the project is funded by the federal government. But Congress has yet to approve an extension of national highway funding. The deadline for doing so is July 31, 2015.

I-74 Bridge construction: How to get around it

"As long as the normal federal dollars that are allocated to our states every year continue to flow to them, they will be able to fund the I-74 Bridge," said Denise Bulat, Executive Director of the Bi-State Regional Commission.

With an approaching deadline, there is a concern that funding could stall.

"There's always a date, a sunset date. And what's happened is prior to that sunset date, Congress has extended it for another month or several months, or year or even two years. And so there's always a sunset date and typically it has been extended," Bulat added.

The reason Bulat isn’t as concerned as others is because the I-74 project is just one of many that would be in the crosshairs across the country.

"This is for every single state in the United States. It would mean transportation funding would come to a halt in every single state in the United States. And so Congress understands how difficult that would be, so we've always gotten at least an extension," explained Bulat.

But funding from the state of Illinois is also a concern. Governor Rauner's office tells News 8 I-74 Bridge funding is under review. No word yet on when that decision will come down. So far about $100 million has already been spent on the I-74 bridge project. It is expected to be finished by 2020 with a total price tag of $1.2 billion.
