I-74 Bridge construction: How to get around it

It's just the beginning of the construction you'll see around the I-74 Bridge with changes to ramps getting on the interstate.

There are  lot of changes happening on Grant and State Street and they're hard not to notice.

"I know that is a little confusing right now but hopefully people get use to it here soon because that will be there for a while," said Mark Brandl, an engineer at the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Crews are working the second stage of the I-74 Bridge project which explains all of the construction.

"This will be a two-year project, but this is just the beginning in the near area of the Mississippi river for reconstructing the new bridge," said Brandl.

The first year will focus on Grant Street, relocating sewer and utility lines are just the start to some of the work. The second year will focus on State Street. For drivers the biggest change they'll notice is the detour. State street ramp is closed. Drivers will have to take the ramp off of Grant Street.

Crews will also be working on the current I-74 Bridge, to keep it in good condition until it's no longer needed. Starting July 20th, there will be lanes closures on the Iowa side. Crews will start with the Illinois bound side first.
