Safety experts predict more people will be traveling along the country's interstates this Fourth of July weekend, resulting in the National Safety Council estimating this year's Independence Day holiday will be one of the deadliest since 2008.
The National Safety Council estimates this holiday weekend will result in 409 deaths and 49,5000 traffic-related injures.
Nearly 42 million Americans will be traveling 50 miles or more this fourth of July weekend; experts say lower gas prices and the improving economy are factors in predicting a higher number of travelers this holiday weekend.
So what can you do to ensure you are safe? The National Safety Council recommends the following tips:
- Always wear your seat belt. The Council estimates 155 lives will be saved during the fourth of July weekend because seat belts are worn.
- Slow down. More speeding-related fatalities occur during the summer months than any other time of year.
- Don't use your cell phone will driving. Drivers talking on cell phones are up to four times as likely to crash, the Council's website states.
- Place children in age-appropriate safety seats.
- Don't drink and drive.
