The president of a Port Byron, Illinois thrift shop fears a recent complaint written to the village will shed a negative light on her business.

Ann's Helping Hands, a second-hand store located along Route 84 in Port Byron, was one of seven properties listed in a complaint emailed to the Village of Port Byron, according to the company's president, Ann McCarrell.

"In the very last paragraph, Ann's Helping Hands was mentioned as being 'ugly,'" McCarrell said.

"Those kind of things keep me on my toes. They are worried about the bike path; they are worried about the parking, so in a way, it keeps me on my toes because then I have to go look for some more money or more volunteers to help me eradicate that problem," McCarrell added.

The village board is scheduled to address the letter on Monday, July 6, but village president Kevin Klute told News 8 the board wouldn't likely take any action, adding the village is supportive of Ann's Helping Hands.

McCarrell acknowledged the building does need repairs, and she said she's working to recruit more volunteers to help her with those repairs. Meanwhile, she said she will continue to do what she can to help the community.
