A man accused of shooting at an officer during a traffic stop has been captured and charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Gregory K. Nelson, age 52, was on the run for several days after Illinois State Police said he shot at a State Trooper on June 23, 2015. Nelson had been pulled over on the I-255 northbound entrance ramp in East St. Louis, Illinois. The Trooper, suspecting Nelson was intoxicated, asked him to get out of his car for sobriety tests.

“At some point, while Nelson was outside of the vehicle, he pulled out a gun and fired at the trooper,” said a statement from the Illinois State Police.

The trooper shot back and Nelson fled the scene on foot, police say.

Nelson was taken into custody at an apartment in St. Ann, Missouri on Saturday, June 27 around 5:45 p.m. He faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and unlawful use of weapons by a felon, according to the statement.

Nelson was held in Missouri awaiting extradition to Illinois, police said.
