Same-sex marriage supporters rally for equality in Davenport

In a narrow, 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Friday that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry in all 50 states.

In a narrow, 5-4 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Friday that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry in all 50 states.

The historic decision sparked rallies and debates in the Quad Cities.

"In 1979, this never crossed my mind, never crossed my mind in any way, shape or form," said Connie Carroll-Spurgeon. "I never thought marriage equality would come along."

Carroll-Spurgeon and her wife, Pat, spent Friday night the Metropolitan Church of the Quad Cities, toasting the Supreme Court decision. Around 50 people gathered at the Davenport church for an 'Equality Rally,' calling the ruling a milestone.

"To think of all the people who generations ago... everything that they have gone through, all the discrimination, all the abuse. We are standing on their shoulders right now, and we are utterly grateful for that," said Pat.

The Supreme Court decision was also on the minds of callers to the Jim Fisher radio show on WOC 1420.

"I know that our founding fathers would be livid, turning over in their graves, and probably would change their minds about founding this country if they knew, if they could have seen what was going on today," said one caller.

Fisher challenged anyone to find the word 'marriage' in the U.S. Constitution, and scoffed at the Supreme Court justices' use of the 14th Amendment in making their ruling.

"Over the long term, what is this going to mean? It means another 50 year fight. We're still having a fight over the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision," said Fisher.
