Streets were closed at the Rock Island Arsenal after an unexploded mortar round was reportedly found near Building 151.

Construction crews made the discovery, which was reported just before 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 2015.

Police closed several intersections including East Street and Beck Avenue, South Street and Beck Avenue, and East Street and 2nd Avenue.

“It is currently unknown whether the suspected unexploded ordnance is inert or not,” said a statement issued just before 1:30 p.m. from Arsenal spokesman Eric Cramer.

The intersections were reopened after the round was removed from the area, Cramer said.  Arsenal workers had to avoid the area until the object was removed.

The Quad City Bomb Squad was going to assess the item.
