Cons trying to scam money from Jo Daviess County residents

A couple of phone scams are hitting Jo Daviess County and residents are being warned of what to watch for.

A couple of phone scams are hitting Jo Daviess County and residents are being warned of what to watch for.

Some of the scam calls show up as Jo Daviess County Jail or Sheriff’s office on caller ID, others pose as the Internal Revenue Service, according to Sheriff Kevin Turner. Turner’s warning was issued Friday, June 12, 2015. Several other phone scams have hit the Quad City area recently, click here to learn about the 12 biggest scams to watch out for. 

Turner says the calls that appear to be from Jo Daviess authorities are Not originating from their offices.  The scammer is attempting to get the victim to place money on a Green Dot card.

In the IRS scam, callers will try to get victims to believe the IRS is filing a lawsuit against them, and will try to make them make an immediate payment over the phone.

“The IRS does NOT contact individuals over the phone,” Turner said in a statement.

Turner is advising residents to be very careful if they get any of these scam calls. He also is advising residents “not to wire money to anyone unless they are absolutely certain of the identity of the recipient.”
