Kids who are out of school for the summer still have unique learning opportunities, including an unusual camp offered for those who might want to become veterinarians.

The first Vet Summer Camp started June 8, 2015, at River View Veterinary Service in Port Byron, Illinois.

Owners invited kids between 10 and 13 years of age to learn just what it takes to be a veterinarian.

"Mostly what we're looking for is to teach kids responsible pet ownership, and teaching them all the ins and outs of what can go wrong if you have a pet . Things to do at home with them to keep them as healthy as possible, and hopefully stir their interest in veterinary medicine," said Dr. Sarah Foust of River View Veterinary Service.

The camp features guest speakers each day of the week; the first day was focused primarily on parasites.

The camp could become an annual event.
