New rules set for Davenport students who ride CitiBus

Davenport students will now need a special pass from the district and parental consent to ride the CitiBus system.

Davenport students will now need a special pass from the district and parental consent to ride the CitiBus system.

As a response to complaints made by CitiBus passengers earlier this year about Davenport students causing trouble on the buses, the district is now taking matters into their own hands.

The students have been allowed to ride for free with their school ID but now parents will have to specially request a CitBus pass for their student and sign off on a list of rules they'll have to follow.

If the students act up they could lose their bus riding privileges.

"If there's misconduct, [it's] reported to the principal of the school and it's the principal [who] will decide whether there should be a suspension of privileges for a period of time, or revocation of privileges, or some other kind of consequence," said Mike Maloney, Director of Operations.

CitiBus drivers will now also be able to control how many students they allow on the bus at one time.

Davenport schools partnered up with CitiBus four years ago for the program. The school district pays the city $13,000 a year to let the students ride the buses for free.

Recently, there have been complaints about students causing fights on the buses, bothering other passengers, and overcrowding the routes.

"I never get scared. I got scared," said Frances Anderson, a CitBus passenger who watched 36 students board her bus, then refuse to let her exit.

The district hopes that by getting the parents involved it will hold the students more responsible and give the bus drivers more power to keep everyone safe and comfortable.
