Iowans will be able to renew their ID and driver’s licenses in some unlikely locations, thanks to new self-service kiosks.

It’s all part of en effort to embrace technology and make life a little easier, according to Iowa Governor Terry Branstad.  They add to online services for driver’s license and ID card renewals and updates, that have been offered in Iowa since 2013.

“If your driver’s license is up for renewal and you happen to stop for a gallon of milk, or are checking out a book at the library, you may be able to take care of the driver’s license task in the same trip,” Branstad said. “The efficient nature of these kiosks allows services to be offered outside of traditional hours.”

To use the kiosks, you must be between 18 and 70 years old, be a U.S. citizen and Iowa resident, and already hold a valid Iowa driver’s license or ID.   It must be less than 180 days to the scheduled renewal date on your current license or ID card, and you must have no medical or vision conditions that would impact your ability to drive.

The kiosks use facial recognition software to take and verify a new photo of the license applicant.  You’ll need your old license or ID card to be scanned into the kiosk, and you’ll need to be prepared to pay with a credit or debit cars.  The kiosk prints verification of your transaction but it takes about three weeks to get your actual license by mail.

The kiosks were placed at 24 locations across Iowa, including libraries, Hy-Vee stores and Kum & Go gas stations.  In the Quad Cities area, a kiosk was placed at the Bettendorf Public Library at 2950 Learning Campus Drive, at the Davenport Hy-Vee at 2200 West Kimberly Road, and at the Burlington Public Library at 210 Court Street.
