The number of abortions across the country is declining, according to a report done by the Associated Press.

In Iowa, those numbers are no different.

According to data from the Iowa Department of Public Health, abortion rates have dropped 18.1 percent from 2010 to 2013.

Penny Dickey, the Chief Clinical Officer at Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, said they've seen a decrease in the number of abortions performed at their clinics across the state.

"From last year to this year we're seeing about a nine percent decrease," Dickey said. "As we look at the long acting reversible contraceptives that we've provided and the number of abortions, we can see that there's a decrease in the unintended pregnancy rates [and] a decrease in the number of abortions that are provided. We tie that to improved access through family planning waivers, through funding sources that have been available to us, and improved methods."

Pro-life activists attribute the decline to better access to counseling services.

In Illinois, the drop is less dramatic, by about two and a half percent.

Five of the six states with the biggest declines don't have any laws restricting abortion clinics or providers.
