A fire in downtown Cambridge, Illinois destroyed one building and left one man injured.

Around 1 p.m. on Saturday, fire crews responded to the old Gamble building in downtown Cambridge on the 200 block of North Prospect street.

"By the time we got here the building was already pretty [engulfed,]" said Chris Brown, the Assistant fire Chief for the Cambridge fire department. "The type of building and the type of construction they had, open buildings like that, it got some air through the roof and [went up in flames] pretty fast."

The man who lived there, named Mike Clark, was able to escape the fire before fire crews arrived, but he was injured in the process.

Clark's brother, Kevin, was at the scene of the fire the following day and said his brother has MS and fell down a flight of stairs while trying to escape the burning building.

Kevin told News 8 he didn't feel like giving an interview on Sunday because it was still a very raw and emotional time for him and his family. He said his brother owned the building and lost everything in the fire, including his medication.

Kevin said the Cambridge community is rallying around their family to help them through this tough time. There are plans for a benefit in the upcoming weeks.
