MidAmerican Energy Company says dozens of their customers have reported getting a phone call from scammers posing as the utility.

The callers tell the customers they face immediate disconnection of service unless they arrange to make payment immediately on the phone via credit card, or by getting a prepaid cash card and calling back with the information on the prepaid card.

“The criminals are often persistent and use sophisticated deceptive tactics that make it appear to Caller ID systems that the scam call is coming from the utility when it is not,” said a June 1, 2015 statement from MidAmerican Energy.

“MidAmerican Energy wants customers to be aware that this is an outright scam.  MidAmerican Energy does not use these methods.  If such a call is received, customers should hang up and call 1-888-427-5632 to inquire about the call with MidAmerican Energy,” the statement said.

Initial reports said more than 60 businesses, mostly small businesses, were getting scam calls in the Des Moines area. On June 3 the company said more than 20 customers from the Quad Cities had reported receiving one of these scam calls.

MidAmerican Energy representatives will not ask you for bank or credit card account numbers, or personal information, over the phone, the statement said.  The utility uses disconnection as a last resort after several attempts to contact customers to resolve overdue bills.
