A transportation idea that's booming in big cities could be coming to the Quad Cities.

The conversation has already started about getting a bike sharing program here. It would offer a unique kind of transportation to the area.

"You have these docking stations and bikes can be checked out with either a membership card or credit card," said Tim Chambers, program director at River Action.

The program would give residents or visitors the ability to borrow a bike for short trips, whether it's for recreational purposes or even a ride to work. Right now there's a feasibility study being done to see if it would even work. The potential areas for bike stations include Davenport, Rock Island, Bettendorf, Moline and Riverdale.

Chambers says the area would be a great fit for the program.

"We have an outstanding network of bike trails along the a great natural resource like the Mississippi river," said Chambers.

The next step is getting the community involved. River Action has created an interactive map where people can post where they would like the bike stations to go. There will also be a meeting for community input.

The meeting will take place Tuesday, June 2 at the Center Station in downtown Moline, from 5:30-7:30pm.
