Quad City man sentenced to 18 years in crash that killed two

A Quad City man was sentenced to 18 years in prison for a drunk driving crash that killed his best friend and his girlfriend.

A Quad City man was sentenced to 18 years in prison for a drunk driving crash that killed his best friend and his girlfriend.

Mitch Gayer, 25, will have to serve 85 percent of the sentence, or roughly, 15 years.

Gayer says he doesn't remember what happened the night his pickup truck crashed on a country road in Milan on November 27, 2013. The accident killed Jamie Sedam and Clayton Carver.

Jamie Sedam's mother addressed the court before Gayer's sentencing.

"My nightmare, my child is dead, murdered, my life sentence is an empty chair, a voice never to be heard," said Tracy O'Hara.

Family members of the victims told the judge they hope this serves as a lesson for Gayer and a message for the entire community.

"You're young and you have a whole life ahead of you. Please honor Jamie and Clayton and never drink and drive again," said Vicky Sedam, Jamie's aunt.
