Man sentenced to 55 years in prison after fatal drunk driving crash

A man who was drunk behind the wheel of a crash that killed two people in 2014 was sentenced to 55 years in prison.

A man was sentenced to serve 55 years in prison after he was found guilty in a fatal drunk driving crash that killed two people.

A judge heard both sides of the crash that happened in September of 2014 before sentencing 24-year-old Kai Miller on Thursday, May 21, 2015.

Previous reports indicate that the crash happened Sunday, September 28, 2014 when Miller, who was 23 at the time, was heading north on Brady Street and broadsided a Hyundai Elantra that was eastbound on 12th Street.  Miller, who was drunk, was driving around 70 mph in the 30 mph zone.

Inside the Hyundai Elantra was driver Andy Adams and passengers Danny DeBacker and Kaleb Hougland.  Hougland was the only one in that car who survived.

During Miller’s trial in mid-April, the defense argued that both drivers were impaired. Adams tested positively for alcohol and marijuana and was above the legal limit. In the end the jurors found Miller guilty of four counts of operating while intoxicated and three counts of recklessness.

Miller cried in court as he apologized to the victims’ families.

Andy’s mom, Melissa Scott, spoke in court saying her life “was forever destroyed.”

Miller will be eligible for parole.
