Airbag recall: What to do now

It’s the largest recall in automotive history and it could take years to get it resolved.

It's the largest recall in automotive history and there are a few steps you can take.

Zimmerman Honda in Moline was flooded with customer questions and concerns over airbags. The airbag manufacturer Takata now says its airbags were made with a propellant that can degrade over time, leading to ruptures.

"When they discharge, the metal shards come out and, obviously, the airbags are designed to protect you not to hurt you," said RC Rogers, General Manager at Zimmerman Honda.

The number of vehicles to be recalled has been expanded to nearly $34 million.

"Its going to take years to do it because 34 million new airbags have to be manufactured and then replaced in the vehicles," said Joan Claybrook, former Administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

While the government says it's working to get the defected airbags replaced quickly, Rogers says they're doing everything they can to help their customers right now.

"They can swing by anytime. We`ll take their car, take their VIN number and run it right through the database and say hey any open recalls at this time," said Rogers.

Claybrook says leave the airbag alone for now, even though there is no guarantee it will work.

"I think you have to leave it hooked up, because you may have a crash where the airbag is desperately needed," said Claybrook.

The NHTSA was also working to get a database of recalled vehicles on a website focused on the airbag issue - click here.
