Severe weather tore through west of the Quad Cities in central Iowa causing multiple rail cars to blow over in the storm.
Rapid winds and heavy rain hit the Des Moines area early Sunday morning, May 17, 2015, the National Weather Service reported. Around 2 a.m. nearly 100 rail cars were blown over in Osceola, according to spotters; 80 overturned rail cars were seen by one and 10 by another.
A tornado was reported on the ground just before 4 a.m. one mile west of Ogden, which is about 80 miles north of where the overturned rail cars were.
Other surrounding communities saw heavy winds that caused downed or uprooted trees and power outages. Near Murray, Iowa, a spotter reported farm buildings had been damaged and even destroyed.
While storms were at their most powerful point, more than 3,000 MidAmerican Energy customers had no power, according to a report by WHO-TV.
After the storms, the National Weather Service was investigating damage to determine if there were more tornados that hit the area.
There have been no reported injuries.
