Bettendorf Community Schools is offering support to students and families in the wake of the passing of senior student Jonathan “Jonno” Russell.

Russell was injured in a crash on Valley Drive in Pleasant Valley, around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, May 10, 2015. Deputy Thompson with the Scott County Sheriff’s Department said his vehicle went into a ditch and struck a telephone pole and two trees.  The 18-year-old had to be extricated from his vehicle and later succumbed to his injuries.

A spokperson from Bettendorf High School said the school district planned to have counselors available Thursday, May 14 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. to support students and staff who were struggling with the loss.

“We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Jonno’s family and friends,” said a spokesperson from the school district.

Parents who have concerns about how to best support their children in this tragedy have been asked to contact the school counselor or administrative staff. The district has posted a link to the National Center on Trauma and Loss which holds information on how to approach a situation like this — click here.
