Cell phone ping helps police capture robbery suspects in Davenport

A ping from a stolen cell phone helped police catch suspects wanted in connection with two game store robberies in Davenport, Iowa.

A ping from a stolen cell phone helped police catch suspects wanted in connection with two game store robberies in Davenport, Iowa.

Video Games Etc., 902 West Kimberly Road, was robbed just after 9 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2015, according to an affidavit from police.  Anita Abbott, 29, of Davenport, allegedly drove 30-year-old Lamarcis Billups to the store, "knowing that her passenger was going to go into the store armed with a High Point 40 cal. handgun to commit a robbery," a police affidavit said.  Billups allegedly ordered everyone in the store into a back room, and forced "customers and employees to tie themselves up with zipties that he provided," the affidavit said. Billups then allegedly took game consoles, other electronics and money from the store.

After the robbery, Abbott allegedly drove Billups from the scene of the crime.

Investigators were able to ping a cell phone taken during the robbery, and that led them to a car at an apartment building in the 2500 block of E. 50th Street.  That's where police found the suspect vehicle from a May 5 robbery of the Game Stop at 4810 Elmore Avenue.  During that robbery, the suspect allegedly pointed a gun at two employees and bound them with packaging tape before taking an XBox One, a PlayStation 4, two NBA video games and $315 in cash.

Lamarcis Billups was arrested when he returned to the car later that night, the affidavit said. Investigators searched Billups' apartment and said they found the gaming items and cash taken in the Game Stop robbery.

Abbott was pulled over at Jersey Ridge Road and 53rd Street just before 11 p.m. May 11, where she was arrested for robbery and for driving while barred.  Court records showed Abbott was barred from driving in Iowa from March 28, 2015 until March 27, 2016.

Billups was charged with two counts of first-degree robbery and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.  He was held in the Scott County Jail in lieu of a total of $50,000 bond, with $25,000 listed as cash-only.
