Muscatine Community College is being sued by a group of its students over accusations that amendment rights were violated.
Staff members with the college’s student-run newspaper “The Calumet” have filed the complaint, alleging that their First and Fourteenth amendment rights were broken, according to a report by the Muscatine Journal.
The lawsuit was filed Tuesday, May 5, 2015 by 12 people who are either currently or were on the newspaper staff. Five of the school’s employees, the Board of Trustees of Eastern Iowa Community Colleges and MCC are listed as defendants on the complaint.
The complaint includes statements that say the administration has allowed staff members to “intimidate and harass student journalists without repercussions,” as well as change the upcoming semester’s schedule to “marginalize the journalism program.”
One of the plaintiffs explained that they aren’t asking for much, just “a full-time advisor,”
An investigation into the matter has begun.
