Teen driver dies after car hits a pole and two trees

An 18-year-old driver had to be extricated from his car and later died after sliding off a road in southeast Scott County.

An 18-year-old driver had to be extricated from his car and later died after sliding off a road in southeast Scott County.

Jonathan Russell of Bettendorf, Iowa, was heading west in the 25600 block of Valley Drive in Pleasant Valley when his vehicle slid sideways at a curved part of the road, according to Deputy Thompson with the Scott County Sheriff's Department.  His vehicle went into a grassy shallow ditch, hitting a telephone pole and two trees.

The crash happened around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, May 10, 2015.

Police described the roadway as a two-lane divided asphalt road with dense trees and low lighting.

Russell had to be extricated from the car; LeClaire Fire Department was able to get him out. He was then taken by a Med Force Helicopter for treatment, Thompson said. On Wednesday, May 13 it was confirmed that Russell had died from his injuries, according to Major Thomas Gibbs.

Russell had not been wearing his seatbelt, according to police.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
