Police in Illinois are cracking down on drivers and passengers who aren’t wearing their seatbelts.  The Illinois Click It or Ticket campaign begins Monday, May 11, 2015.

Cops will be out day and night watching for people on the roads with no seatbelts.

“Memorial Day weekend kicks off the busy summer driving season, and we want to ensure that everyone arrives at their destination safe and sound,” said Chief VenHuizen. “Our officers are prepared to ticket anyone, front or back seat, who is not wearing a seat belt.”

In the State of Illinois, children have to be in a car seat or booster seat until they are 8 years old. All kids under 13 should be riding in the back seat.

During the 2014 Memorial Day weekend, police say there were 12 driving fatalities, three which were related to alcohol.  Police say wearing a seatbelt is the best defense against a drunk driver.

The campaign was set to run through May 25.
