City leaders held a ground breaking for Davenport's Central Fire Station rehab project on Thursday, May 7, 2015.

Two months ago, the fire department presented their plans to the city council. The back part of their current building at Fourth and Scott Street, will come down in the project. It was added on in the 1940s. The original section, which holds the fire trucks now, will be filled with rescue boats and a grass rig in the future.

There will also be a new addition to the building that will house the fire engines in drive through bays. The bays will cut the need for fire fighters to back their trucks into the station from Fourth Street.

"Right now, it's a hazard for the public to be driving down 4th Street and a fire truck's coming out, or when the fire trucks are coming back and they need to back into the station," Davenport Fire Chief Lynn Washburn said.

Thursday's groundbreaking started at 10 a.m. Construction is supposed to be complete by October of 2016. Scott Street in between Third and Fourth Street, will be closed during the construction. Once the station is open, the fire department will primarily use Third Street to get into the station and Fourth Street to get out.
